i bought one of these photo printers when i was overseas in dubai, probably one of the only places to get it i guess. while the printer makes wonderful photographs, i could not get the television option to work, so i have to use my laptop, no big deal. the real problem is finding replacement cartridges. not sure if i ever will! would recommend a kodak or something easier to find here in the states.

 "Great Little Printing Machine" 2004-02-25
By Bette L. Hall CMA, NHC (Oil Capital, OK United States)
I bought the Sony Digital Photo Printer (DPP-SV77) about a year ago with the intention of using it for all my
photo printing. It is easy to use, compact, and fits anywhere. It produces a great looking photo. The photos that measure 4 by 6 inches are perfect for printing postcards or borderless prints.

Negatives: It prints too slow, and it's hard to find the glossy sheets of printing paper/print cartridge packets
that are much too expensive. I'm wondering if they are becoming obsolete??

This makes nice quick photos, but for enlargements and other custom work, this will not be the one to use.

I give this product 4 stars, deducting one star because of the negatives.

"worth the money if you don't want to mess with a PC" 2003-03-09
By Christopher J. Cross (St. Louis, MO United States)
We bought the DPP-SV77 because we recently had twins and wanted to make photos available immediately for friends and family. Our printer for our PC just wasn't up to the job. This printer has some legitimate problems but does a credible job if you don't mind some oversaturation on your color prints. The machine tends to put way too much red in photographs especially caucasian skin tones. Where the machine really shines is the black and white mode. Beautiful pictures! Great contrast, and an accurate grey scale. I also really like the ability to make wallet size prints. The manual is pretty exhaustive, to be honest I never read it. We use a sony digital camera with memory stick so compatibility is smooth and effortless. The controls are very intuitive and I found that while the flip up monitor wasn't terribly bright and often misleading (some menus are difficult to read, the colors on the monitor don't reflect your end result) it was still nice not needing to be hooked up to a PC. Overall, it was worth the money for us, it does what we wanted it to do. However, because of the color "problem" and the fact that there is a finite size you can make a print (4 X 6) if I take some really good color pictures that I want to blow up or frame I'll be taking my business to a professional printer.

"Glorious prints, implementation a bit clunky" 2002-12-16
By A. Block (San Francisco, CA USA)
I bought the DPP-SV77 because I wanted a way to take my digicam media (CompactFlash) directly from the camera and make prints without using a PC. While the DPP can be connected to a computer, the built-in LCD makes this really unnecessary.

Overall, I really like the printer, and will use it a lot to run out copies from my digicam. High points are of course print quality (which while somewhat oversaturated is definitely pleasing) and ease of use.

I found the passive-matrix LCD screen less than great; it has a slow refresh time and isn't optimal for evaluating the exposure quality of a photo. For this reason, I consider the built-in image editing tools a waste of time (and expensive paper); better to get the exposure right using your PC's image editing software.

The printing process also "feels" a bit rickety; the paper goes through four cycles (yellow, magenta, cyan, and an overcoat) and pokes out of the front and back of the printer each time; be careful not to touch it before the print is done. And there are various grinding and clicking noises during the (roughly 2 minute) print cycle that seem at odds with a modern electronic product (inkjets and laser are much quieter).

Nevertheless, the output looks great. You can print either glossy or textured prints, and the borderless option is indistinguishable from a processed film print you'd get at Wal-mart (except that the DPP output will probably be sharper and have better color).

I use a four megapixel camera at full resolution with this printer (roughly matching its maximum 2418x1612 resolution). I did note that the 4x6 aspect ratio (1:1.5) was somewhat longer and narrower than the photos I had taken (1:1.33), and the top and bottom of the picture were cut off upon output. Watch for this, as no warning is given on the screen of any mismatch between aspect ratios.

I also tried output from a 2mp camera, and while the shots were softer they still look very, very good.

Media (paper and dye-sub ink come bundled) is expensive, about seventeen bucks on average for a 25-pack of 4x6 materials. Interestingly, the paper was much cheaper in Japan (ten clams per pack or so), and I have seen ten-packs on e Bay where the price is as low as seven or eight bucks.

Overall, this printer is ideal if you don't want to have to be connected to your computer to output prints from your digipics. This frees you to do things like bring the camera and printer to parties for instant-gratification output. If you are okay with a stationary printer dependent on the PC, I would go with one of the cheaper Sonys with the same print engine and no LCD display.

"Top quality makes this printer affordable" 2002-08-25
By G. Ware Cornell Jr. (Weston FL)
I now have three photo printers, including the HP 1315, which prints 8X10s with great fidelity. But all things considered this is the best photo printer I own.

Why?

The answer lies in the process. The finest commercial printing establishments use dye sublimation printers. These prints are a smoother and more stable. In short it was worth the higher cost of the printer.

What about the printing costs? In a sense it is more economical than ink jet printers. One ribbon per paper pack means no doubt that the printer will properly color the picture because there is always enough dye for each print.

Paper and ribbons are affordable, and the paper comes in several formats, though none is larger than 4X6.

 "junk" 2007-12-22
By David L. Schoon (Norwich, Ct United States)
This printer has always been a pain in the neck to use, since you needed to have sony memory sticks to make it work. Since I graduated several years ago to flash memory, I have to download the pictures to disc, then transfer them to the stick. Bad enough, but now the machine refuses to recognise the 4 - 6" prints. It will print the little 3 - 5", but when I put in the larger paper and cartridge, the same pictures come out blank. I am sooooo thrilled. Like I said, junk.

"Mac Users Avoid This Product!!!!" 2005-04-01
By Katie F Vetimay (Tucson, AZ USA)
I used this printer for quite some time with my Pismo running OS 9.2. When I purchased a Powerbook G4 running OS X, this printer was obsolete, i.e. no drivers available. Sony was absolutely not interested in making a driver for this printer and could not care less about the customer STUCK with this pathetic piece of equipment.

If you are a mac user forget it. This printer is not worth a dime. If you already have one, find a PC user to sell it to. Shame on Sony for not working with Apple. If I could give it a rating lower than 1 I would.

"Some hints for getting the best output" 2005-02-26
By Stephen Hoek (Auckland, New Zealand)
This printer produces impressive output, although the colors have a little too much magenta. The resolution is specified as 403 dpi but to get a 1:1 pixel mapping from (say) photoshop you need to set the image resolution to 403.66 dpi.

It is correct that Sony do not officially make the Mac OS X drivers for this printer available for download. They do ship on the install CD though. A google search for "DPP-EX5_EX7" should locate the driver on the internet.

"A great printer but for lack of a driver" 2004-07-17
By John Leggatt (Los Angeles, CA USA)
I was delighted when my then-new Sony Digital Photo Printer DPP-SV77 worked on my Mac as advertised: bright, true colours printing in a reasonable amount of time...but when I upgraded to Mac OS X from OS 9.2.2, can you imagine how I felt when I discovered that Sony DOES NOT provide a printer driver for any version of OS X? I am unable to coax it to print in Classic (OS X's emulator for OS 9.x), and so the printer now lies in state on my desktop.

Since Sony now only supports Windoze, I can only warn other Mac users to STAY AWAY from this printer; it is NOT compatible with the current version of the Macintosh.

"Great quality but colour levels are off a bit" 2003-09-27
By
The print quality on this little printer is fantastic....you would not be able to distinguish it from proffessional digital photo lab grade I'm sure. It can be used by itself and a Memory Stick (or other media card via a 'PC card'), plugged into a tv monitor or via a computer. To utilise it's built in effects options (such as gretting card and other visual effects) it must be connected to a tv set. Unfortunately you can not do this with the computer (which seems strange and unnessessary).

Loading paper is very simple. 25 quantity paper packs come with printer cartridges that last for 25 prints.
Print speed is very fast (90 secs) and watching the printing is rather satisfying to watch!
It will only print 4x6 or 3x4.

This printer should get a hands down 5 stars but it doesn't....

The red colour output is oversaturated. You will notice this particulary when you snap people. The skin tones come out way too warm (red) and really are not acceptable unless you touch up the image first via a program. However, by reducing the red tint, you sacrifice the rest of the colours in the image to an extent. The picture you are getting still is better than a dot matrix or lazer print image but you think what could have been if they had addressed this problem when they made it!

Bottom line. If you can pick one up cheap (like I did) and are prepared for the 'red issue', this is still much better than basic printers, otherwise, best to see what the newer models are like.

 "Great Product Terrible Support" 2009-03-13
By ETI Gunengine.com (Prescott, AZ, USA)
Fargo is one of the top three plastic card ID companies, and the c30e is their low cost leader. We sell thousands of ID's and ID systems to police departments, colleges and associations at lawbadge dot com, and of the top systems, Fargo comes out on top. They don't sell direct, so you can see the line at Fargo dot com then come back to Amazon to buy-- note that the c30e is in the 300 family, and many items are the same for both units. You'll find several stores selling on Amazon, but Discount ID dominates Amazon. Even through Amazon, Discount ID will give you a good price on this unit IF you tell them you found the best price. Generally this item goes for between 1200 and 1500, with a list over $2,000 depending on features. CDW sells them for $1,100 when they can get them, but they never stock them, so you'll have to wait a couple weeks compared to Amazon/ DID, but you can use that with Discount ID as a benchmark for their "low price guarantee." Important note: if you start seeing the same exact printer over and over, even here on Amazon, and it seems to be going for $3,000 to $5,000 with wild price differences, you're looking at different features. The basic unit prints in COLOR ONE SIDE, and higher prices MIGHT be stepping you up to two sided, mag striped, bar code/mag stripe embedded and other features. The good news is that these can be added later if you need them. If you see a VERY low price, be sure you're not just looking at the PRINT HEAD (the most expensive part), which are sold separately as replacements (you do get one with the unit).

Speaking of, you DO NOT get a ribbon when you buy this unit anywhere! These range from $50 on CDW and sometimes on Discount ID/ Amazon, up to over $100-- for the 250 card ribbon/ cartridge. Be SURE you're using the right ribbon-- YMCKO, and be sure it's color ("pre loaded full color"). Black is NOT called black, it's called "resin", and to confuse you, color ads often say "color resin" meaning the black component is named resin. Ads also have two incorrect/ out of date promises: 1. They say you get 100 cards with the unit. NOPE, NO cards come with the unit. 2. They say you get (as a single user), the "convenient" Build a Badge or Build-a-Badge software FREE from Fargo. Build a Badge has been discountinued and is NOT available from Fargo on anyone else-- see below for the trick around this to save $600 on software.

You can get cards here on Amazon, but be sure you get the right ones, or the c30e will self destruct, tear up it's very delicately thin ribbon, or not print bleeds due to poor registration. A paper jam in an HP is one thing, a card jam is another nightmare altogether! All the ads say the c30e takes CR-80 cards, which is true, but there also is a CR-79 toggle switch on the unit, which really only works well with FARGO's OWN cards. Unfortunately Fargo only sells through VARS (approved integrators like us, but we're not blowing our horn here, they are cheaper at Discount ID here on Amazon if you search on plastic ID cards, or CDW, although they are often out of stock at CDW), so you'll have to get a clone, which is FINE AS LONG AS YOU STICK TO CR-80 with the non-Fargo card brands here on Amazon. Some don't say CR-80, but CR-80 is 3.37 x 2.13 by definition, and you'll want an "030" or .030", otherwise known as "30 mil." Be careful, the key is CR-80, and 79 also comes in 30 mil, which is thickness, NOT dimension.

On to "build a badge". Don't bother putting build a badge in keyword searches on Amazon or Google-- you'll end up in a five hour waste of time, or worse yet, buy the wrong software. If you go to Fargo dot com, you'll find they are just as confused, and give PR releases about Build a badge, make you fill out a form for one of their VARs locally, then you get harrassing sales calls trying to sell you a $1,500 "Assure" suite software.

The secret is: Build a Badge has been replaced with another free product on Fargo's site, which is like a maze, called Asure ID SOLO. It's really Build a Badge by another name! Note it's Asure, NOT ASSURE-- if you spell it wrong, you'll find a totally unrelated software program that's about internal PC ID's, not plastic cards, and if you pay $99 for it, you'll find it totally unrelated to your c30e! Since Amazon doesn't allow links, if you Google "Fargo Asure Solo" you will be taken to a link we also posted on lawbadge dot come, which is Fargo dot come slash ad hoc dot cfm question mark oid=7015 (Fargo's generic Google ID for searches). This will take you to an even longer cfm file, offering to "download" Asure ID (the $600 to $2,000 version). The download says it's a free trial, and you'll have to "buy" it from one of their VARS within 14 days.

This is all untrue. Here's how you get it free: 1. Click on download Asure ID (don't go to the direct download link, it will work, but you won't get a product activation serial and it will be worthless). 2. AFTER you click, you'll see TWO Asures-- and indeed one is the FREE Solo. 3. Click download and SAVE (do NOT click OPEN, or you'll wait an hour for a zip file that takes three seconds to save). Put the saved file on your desktop, as it's got a self extractor so you won't have to install Winzip if you don't have it. 4. Create an "Asure" folder on your desktop to extract to. When you click the "Asure 205.6.1" file, it will extract to that folder. 5. You're still not done. When you first clicked download, you had to fill out a "VAR request" form, which asked for your email DO GIVE a valid email, as while you're downloading, Fargo's server is sending you the product serial, and the download won't work without it. 6. Now you'll find the folder you created filled with files on your desktop. Ignore the separate Asure ID 5.6.1 file, it's the compressed file and is now worthless. Do NOT click on Asure ID in the new folder, it will give you error messages, or blow up windows if you don't have XP (NONE OF THIS WORKS ON VISTA). Instead, click the icon with the little arrows that reads "setup setup launcher." This will step you through the install. But wait. Once you're done, you will NOT find Asure ID anywhere on your desktop, as there is no icon! If you try to click the Asure ID logo in the folder, it will give you an error message or blow up. You need to go to your start menu, look at the very bottom, and open the program with the start menu ("all programs" in XP or 2000). We did get this to run on Vista, but the tricks are beyond this review, email us at mail at lawbadge dot com if you want specifics free about Vista.

Another stupid glitch about the c30e-- there is NO owner's manual! The quick start CD basically says to run the machine install. If you do it in the wrong order it blows up. The right order is: first install the drivers, then plug in the USB and power the unit. Then install the "Fargo workbench" (for troubleshooting only, does nothing to design cards). Finally, after you're all done (including putting a ribbon in the unit), you can view the install file, which gives you this same info and nothing else! Luckily, this little unit is simple and reliable once you get used to it. Be sure to remove the plastic roller cap from the ribbon AND the tape from the cleaning roller, but do NOT remove the "sticky" roll tape, which IS the cleaner. This is confusing, as the online directions say to remove the sticky tape-- and there are TWO, one which stays. If you screw this up, the very tiny film will tear, and you're out 50 bucks.

Usint Asure ID Solo is a pain. You first have to design and save a template, THEN click enter data to actually populate it. Important features like transparency are missing (so you can't put a big logo screened to a percent in the background like you can with Asure Express or other clone software). You can approach this with the gamma setting, but it comes out less than pretty. Even changing fonts or making them color is tricky-- DO read the .pdf that came with the download.

Speaking of, you need to REGISTER the software immediately, or your "14 day trial" (yes, even the freeware has a damn trial) will expire. When you install (you'll need the serial number from Fargo's email), you will then get a second number once you register it, and it's then free and good to go. You will get a pesky VAR based on your zip code, but they won't do squat for you about the freeware.

All in all, this is an awesome little machine which will give you many years of service with many features like database entry of names and 100 cards in the hopper at a time with no DBMS skills needed, IF you can get around the terrible Fargo VAR system, which you must do to get a good price and buy on Amazon.

 "Beware!!" 2009-01-29

Do not buy this printer if you want to use it with OS X v3 or higher - it is not compatible. I am giving this product 1 star because Sony should have updated the software by now, or at least should let consumers know how outdated it is. My computer is 3 years old, and is still considered too "new". It's ridiculous.

if you are a mac user, this is a great deal for a darn good dye sub printer! install the OSX driver and off you go into iPhoto-land printing all your pictures using all sorts of themes from within iPhoto. my fave tho' is the tried and true simple white edged border. it also does edge to edge no problem. this is NOT a substitute for kodak services if that's your bag, but for at-home creativeness and family album fun this can not be beat. i like to use it with "Comic Life" to add captions and make postcards. it is too much fun, low hassle, and creates great looking prints. so when you are ready to toss the ink jet out the window in frustration, for postcard size prints, check out this little unit.

 "Perfect" 2004-11-27
By J. Roberts (VA)
I've been an avid amateur photographer for over 20 years, and I can tell you the prints from this printer are top notch and lab quality.

The color rendition is extemely accurate so long as you properly load the Sony printer driver. Those of you who get unexpected results may because of the quality or calibration of your computer monitor. I have not noticed, as some have, that any color is particularly bright or vivid. The price per print is a little hefty, around $0.65 per print if your buy the larger 75 print kit, but of course you only print the ones you really like. Be advised that Sony does not include in the box any starter print cartridge or paper in the box, so you must buy these separatly.

The print quality is awesome, I am using a Sony Cybershot 5 megapixel camera. I took it out of the box and loaded the paper, cartridge and memory stick and started printing right away! It has so many features. You can edit your pics right on your television then print. It has many editing features as well! My only concern is that it does't come with a USB cable, but that can always be purchased at a later time. Overall, this is an excellent photo printer.
